Origins
Nicoffeine is a German noise rock band from Koblenz, consisting of musicians Soheyl Nassary (guitar, vocals), Guido Lucas (bass), and Jörg A. Schneider (drums). The band was originally formed in 1995 under the name Midian and changed their name to Nicoffeine in 2000.
The band’s origins date back to 1995 when Soheyl Nassary, along with Farjan Dehnad Tabatabai (vocals) and Thorsten Pagé (bass), founded Midian. After several lineup changes on drums, Christoph Reichling was replaced by Carsten Michels and Thorsten Pagé by Christian Jung in 1996/1997. These new members enriched the band’s musical development, leading to the release of an EP in 1998 on their own label, Polychronoise.
Reinvetion
In 2000, following a significant evolution in their sound, the members decided to rename the band Nicoffeine. Farjan Dehnad Tabatabai left the band just before the name change, and Nicoffeine continued as a trio with guest vocalist Mario Burgard. They recorded their first studio album in the Blubox studio run by producer Guido Lucas. In 2001, they released „Beware the Ides of August / Supercharger No.6“ on bluNoise Records, where they continue to release their albums.
Between 2001 and 2003, further lineup changes occurred. Soheyl Nassary took over vocal duties, and the band was expanded by the addition of electronic act Rotorboy (David Wölk of Cowboys in Cubes), who contributed soundscapes to Nicoffeine’s albums. In 2005, the album „Savant Lies Away From Home“ was released.
Last mark
In 2006, drummer Norman Achenbach was replaced by Jörg A. Schneider, who also played on the third studio album „Admiring Those Artholes“ in 2007. Before recording their fourth album „Lighthealer Stalking Flashplayer“ (2010), Guido Lucas replaced long-time bassist Christian Jung.
All Nicoffeine albums have been released on bluNoise Records and produced by Guido Lucas. The cover artworks have been designed by Soheyl Nassary, who is also responsible for the band’s graphic aspects.
Musically, Nicoffeine is generally classified as noise rock, but their sound crosses multiple genres. Elements of alternative rock, art rock, progressive rock, drone, no wave, sludge, neo-psychedelia, ambient, and avant-garde blend into their unique style.
